Brussels by us

On 25 January, in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary of State for the digital transition Bianca Debaets and Imec-Smit-VUB, the BRIC organised a press conference to unveil the "Brussels by us" concept.

This application, funded by the Secretary of State for the digital transition and supported by the BRIC, will allow citizens, residents, commuters, workers, business owners and visitors from three Brussels districts to give their opinion and participate in improving their lives, by solving real problems.

"'Brussels by us' is intended to elicit the ideas of the people of Brussels regarding their district. We are sure that everyone has suggestions for improving life in their district. We will use 'Smart City' technology to collect as many concrete and innovative ideas as possible, and then utilise them effectively".

Three zones have been identified, each with specific themes and specific target groups:

  • Zone I – Northern Quarter: possible themes include security, urban agriculture, smart mobility, the regeneration of empty spaces, etc.; the target groups are commuters, professionals working in the Northern Quarter, as well as neighbourhood residents.
  • Zone II – (Pedestrian) Centre: possible themes here include tourism, specific businesses, housing, the public space; the target groups are small retailers, tourists, visitors and neighbourhood residents.
  • Zone III – U-Square (VUB/ULB campus): possible themes include smart education and entrepreneurship, sustainability on campus, food waste, etc.; the target groups are students, academic staff, start-ups, 'fablabs' and local residents.

Workshops will be organised in each zone to identify the challenges and key questions, to which participants can respond.

This application will be launched at our Brussels Smart City event on 24/04. This event will mark the end of the cycle of Smart events launched in 2015.
